Writing Prescriptions

Add medications with drug name, dosage, frequency, duration, Arabic instructions, and refill count

3 min read

Overview

SehaFile's prescription module allows doctors to add multiple medications to a visit, each with structured fields for drug name, dosage, frequency, duration, patient instructions in Arabic, and refill count. Prescriptions are stored per-visit and can be printed with the clinic header or applied from saved templates for common treatment regimens.

Steps to Add a Prescription

  1. Open the visit workspace — Navigate to the active visit and locate the الأدوية (Medications) section.
  2. Click “+ Add Medication” — The prescription entry form expands with input fields.
  3. Enter the drug name — Type the medication name in the اسم الدواء field. This supports autocomplete from the clinic's drug formulary if configured.
  4. Specify the dosage — Enter the dose in the الجرعة field (e.g., “500mg”, “10ml”, “1 tablet”).
  5. Select the frequency — Choose from the dropdown:
    • مرة يوميا (once daily)
    • مرتين يوميا (twice daily)
    • 3 مرات يوميا (three times daily)
    • 4 مرات يوميا (four times daily)
    • عند الحاجة (as needed / PRN)
    • قبل النوم (before sleep)
  6. Set the duration — Enter the treatment duration in the المدة field (e.g., “7 days”, “2 weeks”, “1 month”).
  7. Add Arabic instructions (optional) — The instructions_ar field allows detailed patient instructions in Arabic (e.g., “يؤخذ بعد الأكل بساعة”).
  8. Set refill count — Enter how many times the prescription can be refilled (default is 0 for single-use).
  9. Click “Add” — The medication appears in the list below with a blue background card.
To save time for frequently prescribed regimens, create a prescription template from Settings > Prescription Templates. Templates can include multiple medications and be applied to any visit with a single click via the “Apply Template” button.

Managing Prescriptions

  • Remove a medication — Click the red حذف (Delete) button on any medication card
  • View all medications — The medication list shows drug name, dosage, and frequency for each entry
Always verify drug interactions before finalizing prescriptions. SehaFile will show interaction warnings if the drug formulary module is configured with interaction data.

FAQ

Can I prescribe a drug not in the formulary?

Yes. The drug name is a free-text field. You can type any medication name even if it is not in the clinic's formulary catalog.

How do refills work?

The refills field indicates how many additional times the patient can collect the same prescription from the pharmacy without a new visit. A value of 0 means single dispensing only.

Can patients see their prescriptions?

Yes. Once the visit is completed and synced to the citizen profile, prescriptions appear in the patient's SehaFile citizen app under their health records.
