ICD-10 Code Management

Overview

ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision) codes are the standard for recording diagnoses across all clinics on SehaFile. The platform maintains a central ICD-10 database that doctors search when documenting patient diagnoses. Platform admins with taxonomy.manage permission can add, edit, and delete codes, perform bulk imports from WHO datasets, toggle "commonly used" flags to improve doctor search experience, and view usage statistics to understand disease patterns.

Viewing ICD-10 Codes

1. Navigate to Taxonomy > ICD-10 from the sidebar. The page shows a paginated list of all ICD-10 codes (50 per page by default).
2. Table columns: Code, Description (Arabic), Description (English), Chapter, Category, Commonly Used flag, and Usage Count.
3. Search — Search by code (e.g., "J06"), description keyword (Arabic or English), or chapter name.
4. Filter by chapter — Use the chapter dropdown to filter by ICD-10 chapters (e.g., Chapter I: Infectious diseases, Chapter IX: Circulatory system, etc.).

Adding a New Code

1. Click "Add Code" at the top of the ICD-10 page.
2. Fill in the form:
   • Code — The ICD-10 code (e.g., "E11.9", "J06.0")
   • Description (Arabic) — Arabic description of the diagnosis
   • Description (English) — English description
   • Chapter — The ICD-10 chapter this code belongs to
   • Category — Sub-category within the chapter
3. Click "Save" — The code is immediately available for doctors to use when recording diagnoses.

Editing and Deleting Codes

1. Click on a code row to open the edit form. Modify description, chapter, or category as needed.
2. Delete a code — Click the delete icon. Codes with active usage (linked to patient records) cannot be deleted, only deactivated.

Toggling Commonly Used Codes

1. Find the code in the list.
2. Click the star/toggle in the "Commonly Used" column, or navigate to the code detail and click "Toggle Common".
3. Effect — Codes marked as commonly used appear at the top of the doctor's search results when writing diagnoses, making it faster to find frequent diagnoses like hypertension (I10), diabetes (E11), or upper respiratory infection (J06).

Bulk Import

1. Click "Bulk Import" at the top of the ICD-10 page.
2. Prepare your import file — JSON array with objects containing: code, description_ar, description_en, chapter, category.
3. Upload and validate — The system checks for duplicate codes, invalid formats, and missing required fields.
4. Review and confirm — Preview shows new codes to be added and any skipped duplicates. Confirm to complete the import.

Usage Statistics

1. Navigate to Taxonomy > ICD-10 > Stats for an overview of code usage across the platform.
2. Metrics shown:
   • Total codes in database
   • Codes with active usage (used at least once)
   • Top 20 most-used codes
   • Usage by chapter distribution
   • Monthly diagnosis recording trends
3. Usage map — Navigate to Analytics > ICD-10 > Usage Map to see geographic distribution of diagnoses, showing which diseases are more prevalent in different regions of Egypt.

FAQ

How many ICD-10 codes should be imported?

The WHO ICD-10 contains approximately 70,000 codes. It is recommended to import the full dataset for completeness, but mark only the most common 100-200 codes as "commonly used" to keep the doctor's search results manageable.

Can doctors suggest new codes?

Currently, only platform admins can add codes. If a doctor cannot find a code, they should contact their clinic admin who can submit a support ticket requesting the code be added.

Does the system support ICD-11?

The current system is built on ICD-10. ICD-11 support is on the roadmap. When implemented, existing ICD-10 codes will be mapped to their ICD-11 equivalents automatically.
