Lab Order Templates

Create bundled lab test templates for common diagnostic panels

2 min read

Overview

Lab order templates bundle frequently requested lab tests into reusable panels. Instead of ordering individual tests each time (e.g., CBC, Liver Function, Kidney Function for a diabetic checkup), you can create a "Diabetic Annual Screening" template that includes all tests with their priorities and special instructions. This ensures comprehensive testing and saves ordering time.

Creating a Lab Order Template

  1. Navigate to Settings > Templates > Lab Orders — Access through the Settings page, Templates section.
  2. Click "New Lab Template" — The template builder appears.
  3. Enter template details:
    • Name (Arabic) — e.g., "فحص سكر شامل"
    • Name (English) — e.g., "Comprehensive Diabetes Panel"
    • Specialty — Select the relevant specialty for filtering
  4. Add tests — Click "Add Test" for each lab test in the panel:
    • Test name — The lab test name (e.g., "HbA1c", "Fasting Blood Glucose", "Lipid Profile")
    • Lab name — Optional preferred lab facility
    • Priority — Normal, Urgent, or STAT
    • Notes — Special instructions (e.g., "Patient must be fasting 12 hours")
  5. Set sharing — Toggle is_shared for clinic-wide availability.
  6. Save — The template is ready for use during visits.
Tip: Create specialty-specific templates like "Pre-operative Labs" (CBC, PT/PTT, Metabolic Panel, Blood Type) or "Thyroid Workup" (TSH, Free T3, Free T4). These standardize your diagnostic workflow.

Using Lab Templates During Visits

In the visit form, navigate to the Lab Orders section. Click "Use Template" and select a template. All tests from the template are added to the current order. You can remove individual tests or add extra ones before submitting the lab order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine multiple templates in one order?

Yes. You can apply multiple templates sequentially. Duplicate tests are automatically detected and merged.

Do templates include pricing information?

No. Lab pricing is managed separately through the fee schedule or insurance price lists. Templates focus on the clinical ordering side.

How is the use_count tracked?

Every time a template is applied during a visit, the use_count increments by 1. This helps identify which templates are most valuable to your clinical workflow.
