Overview

Prescription templates save doctors significant time by allowing them to save commonly prescribed medication combinations as reusable templates. Instead of typing out the same drugs, dosages, and durations for common conditions every visit, a doctor can apply a template with a single click. Templates can be personal (visible only to the creator) or shared (available to all doctors in the clinic).

Creating a Prescription Template

  1. Navigate to Settings > Templates > Prescription — Or create directly during a visit by clicking "Save as Template" after writing a prescription.
  2. Click "New Template" — The template editor opens.
  3. Name the template — Give it a descriptive name (e.g., "Upper Respiratory Infection - Adult" or "Hypertension Standard Protocol").
  4. Add medications — For each drug in the template:
    • Search for the drug from the formulary (auto-complete from drug_formulary table)
    • Set dosage (e.g., "500mg")
    • Set frequency (e.g., "3 times daily")
    • Set duration (e.g., "7 days")
    • Add instructions (e.g., "After meals")
  5. Set visibility — Toggle "Shared" to make the template available to all clinic doctors, or leave it as personal.
  6. Save template — Click Save. The template now appears in the prescription template list during visits.
Tip: Create templates for your top 10-15 most common diagnoses. This can reduce prescription writing time by 80% for routine visits. Templates track usage count so you can see which are most popular.
Warning: When applying a template, always review the medications for the specific patient. Templates do not check for patient allergies or drug interactions automatically — the doctor must verify suitability before confirming.

Using Templates During a Visit

In the visit form, click the Templates button in the prescription section. Browse or search templates by name. Click Apply to insert all template medications into the current prescription. You can then modify individual entries as needed for the specific patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit a shared template?

Only the template creator or a clinic admin can edit shared templates. Other doctors can duplicate the template and create their own modified version.

What happens if a drug in the template is removed from the formulary?

The template will still apply but will show a warning icon next to the removed drug. You should update the template to replace the discontinued medication.

Is there a limit to medications per template?

No hard limit, but we recommend keeping templates under 10 medications for usability. Complex protocols with more drugs should be split into multiple templates.
